How To Get Out Of A Hair Rut...

Dark mornings, darker evenings, dull, blustery weather, when will the sun come back?! As you can probably agree January has felt like the longest month in history! If your looking in the mirror wondering where your complexion went, asking how your going to get that shine back to your hair then look no further! Here are 5 ways to get out of a winter hair rut…

Get Bangs…

I don’t mean an American fringe of course! Bangs are the modern word for not quite a fringe but not just flat at the front either, somewhere in between. The angle needs to be cut in the correct way in order for it to sit perfectly, going from short to longer shaping the face softly. The thing I love about this style is that it looks gorgeous when the hair is up too!

Get Honey…

Speak to your colourist and have a full consultation about colour before making the leap. A good technician will go through ideas and be honest with you about what is achievable and if there will be any compromise on the condition on the hair, never go through with a service if a skin test hasn’t been carried out 48 hours prior. I feel Balayage and ‘ombré’ are here to stay trend wise, it has sent us into a soft and more relaxed approach to colour, clients want highlights, honey tones and lighter mid lengths and ends and a dark richer root. The thing I love about this look is its low maintenance and literally grows into the hair!

Get Styling…

I know, I know, when it comes to looking for stylings tools and products we are completely spoilt for choice! Brands claim to provide a miracle device that’s going to get your hair looking Pinterest worthy within minutes. Many of my clients try these and just end up disheartened, frustrated and fed up. When i’m having a consultation with my clients I find out as much about their life as possible, this way we can discuss how much time she has to wash, dry and style her hair on a daily basis. Its easy for me to say ‘take fine sections’ and ‘spend 2 hours curling and shaping’ - we both know nobody got time for that.

My recommendation is to keep it simple. I have recently discovered Beauty Works curling wand. I actually LOVE the tool. Its big enough to not get your hair tangled, provides sectioning clips, heat glove, a vegan bristle brush and best of all its PINK… I have posted a video on how to use too…

Get Blunt…

‘‘I want to keep the length’’ something every hairdresser hears at least 5 times a day… I believe there’s so much physchology with clients in hair and mostly when your trying to grow your hair if you actually ask yourself why you want long hair you probably couldn’t answer… so.. if your stuck in the rut of ‘‘as little off as possible’’ you definitely need a shake up! Known as the ‘lob’ a shorter blunt style can look amazing.. it has to be cut to precision, dried and the weight must be taken out in order for it to sit and grow nicely.

Get Clued Up…

As a professional I can’t stress enough the importance of finding a reputable and knowledgeable hairdresser before making any leaps. A full consultation should be carried out and you should feel excited and confident about any new style or colour, do your research and get plenty of images ready to give to your stylist. A hairdresser that explains professionally what is achievable and what isn’t is what you should look for, sometimes they may not tell you what you want to hear if it means compromising the condition but I always say its better to have your hair slightly darker or warmer than desired rather than over processing and it becoming damaged…
